NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University women's track & field team opened the 2010-11 indoor season in strong fashion on Sunday, taking four event titles at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open at the Freeman Center.
Senior
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) took the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.41 – after finishing second in the preliminary heats with an 8.57.
Freshman
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) won her first collegiate track event, running a 1:35.00 to take the 600-meter run.
The Lady Pirates also took home a pair of relay titles; the 4x400-meter relay 'A' team won gold with a time of 3:48.18, while the distance medley relay squad ran a 12:29.96 to take that title.
Senior
Jocelyn Watkins (Ellenwood, Ga.) finished second in the shot put with a mark of 12.85 meters, while junior
DeShana Briggs (Norfolk, Va.) jumped 1.62 meters in the high jump to come in tied for third. Junior
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) ran a 1:35.22 to finish second in the 600-meter run.
Breana Norman ran an 8.75 to finish second in the 60-meter hurdles, and Vassell finished third in the 60-meter dash with a 7.61.
Sophomore
Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) came home fourth in the 800-meter run with a 2:21.17 and freshman
Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) ran a 5:23.10 in the mile run to finish fourth.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. to compete in the Coach O Invitational hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore.
