MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hampton University sophomore
Claudia Calder recorded a pair of top-five finishes to lead the women's track & field team over the weekend in the Shamrock Invitational at Doug Shaw Stadium, hosted by Coastal Carolina University.
Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.72, before also finishing fourth in the women's heptathlon with 4,391 points. She won the high jump portion at 1.67 meters, before also finishing third in the 800-meter run (2:22.29) and fifth in the long jump (5.08 meters).
Calder was also on the 4x400-meter relay team that finished 10th with a time of 3:53.92.
The 4x800-meter relay team – comprised of
Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.),
Kenya Jones,
Jahlisa Smith and
Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.) – turned in the best finish of the weekend for the Lady Pirates, finishing second after running a 9:05.21.
Petrice Richards (Manchester, Jamaica) ran a 24.62 in the 200-meter dash to finish fifth, while
Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) ran an 11:33.49 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish sixth. Jones finished seventh in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:37.73.
Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) also ran a 2:15.15 to finish ninth in the 800-meter run. Richards came in eighth in the 100-meter dash with an 11.83.
Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) ran a 1:02.47 to finish sixth in the 400-meter hurdles, while
Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) finished eighth with a 1:03.41 and
Tashana Willock (Kingston, Jamaica) ran a 1:03.76 to finish ninth. Gainey was also eighth in the heptathlon with 3,979 points.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday, when they head to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the Central Florida Invitational.
