DIXON AUTOMATICALLY QUALIFIES FOR NCAA

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. –
Hampton University junior Reggie Dixon automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in record fashion on Friday and Saturday at the 2011 Penn State Nationals, held at the Ashenfelter Multi-Sport Facility.

Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a school-record 6.58 in the finals of the 60-meter dash, winning the event and qualifying for the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships. His time was also a meet and facility record.

Dixon also ran a 21.93 in the 200-meter dash invitational to finish seventh.

Freshman Je'Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) won his first collegiate event, taking the 400-meter dash with a 48.41. He also ran on the 4x800-meter relay squad that finished second in the invitational race with a 7:40.88.

Hutchison ran that race along with sophomore Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.), freshman Larry Ramirez (Pleasantville, N.J.) and freshman Brandon Burton (Newport News, Va.).

Senior Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) also had a record-setting meet, winning the men's heptathlon with a school-record 5,312 points. Dixon, who has set the school mark in that event three times, won four of the seven events.

The Pirates distance medley relay squad finished fourth with a 10:18.99.

The Lady Pirates took home an event title, winning the distance medley relay with an 11:51.71. Freshman Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.), junior Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.), freshman Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) and freshman Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) made up the team.

Tate also ran a season-best 2:10.53 to finish second in the 800-meter run.

Senior Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) ran a season-best 8.16 to finish second in the 60-meter hurdles, while finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash invitational with a 23.96. Her time in the 60-meter hurdles is the fourth-fastest in the nation.

She also ran in the 4x400-meter relay, along with Robinson, Taylor and junior Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica). That foursome came in second with a 3:43.33.

Calder also compiled 3,694 points in the women's pentathlon to finish fourth.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday, when they head to New York, N.Y. to compete in the Armory New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Select Pirates will also compete in the Vince Brown Invite at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. on Saturday.
