FREE THROWS HURT PIRATES IN 78-71 LOSS TO SACRED HEART

CANCUN, MexicoDarrion Pellum scored a season- and game-high 28 points for the Hampton University men's basketball team (1-3) in a tough 78-71 loss to the Pioneers of Sacred Heart University (3-2) Tuesday afternoon in the Mayan Division of the 2011 Triple Crown Cancun Challenge at Moon Palace Resort.
 
Following four lead changes in the first half, Sacred Heart was able to build a 15-point lead by shooting 58 percent from the floor and making 8 of 14 shots (57 percent) from beyond the arc. The Pirates shot just 44 percent from the floor in the first half, but made just five of nine shots from the free throw line to head into the half down 46-31.
 
The Pirates would mount a comeback and cut a 15-point lead to three points following a good layup by Koron Reed with 14:11 left in the game with the score 52-49. The Pioneers would then go on a 10-0 run, but Hampton got back within four points on two different occasions. The first was at the 1:32 mark, when David Bruce made a layup to make the score 69-65, and again with 44 second to play, when Mike Tuitt made a layup.
 
The Pirates' run was not enough; they were trying to cut the score, Sacred Heart was able to make seven of its final eight free throws to secure the win.   
 
Pellum led all scoring with 28 points, while Bruce and Chris Tolson also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Sacred Heart finished the game with five players scoring in double figures, led by Steve Glowiak, who finished with a team-high 16 points.
 
Hampton will play SIU-Edwardsville in the consolation game of the Mayan Division on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. EST.
