LANDOVER, Md. – The Hampton University women's track & field team ran away with the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The Lady Pirates have won eight of the last nine MEAC indoor championships, including seven straight from 2003-09. Hampton finished with a meet- and school-record 188.5 points, while Norfolk State finished second with 102.5 points.
Head coach
Maurice Pierce was named the meet's Most Outstanding Coach, while freshman
Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named Most Outstanding Field Performer and senior
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) shared Most Outstanding Runner honors with Maryland Eastern Shore's Cynthia Anais.
“Our freshmen stepped up to the plate,” Pierce said. “On top of Racquel's performances, with our freshmen, it all came together today.”
The Pirates finished second for the second straight year, tallying 104 points. Norfolk State won its sixth straight indoor crown with a meet-record 200 points. Senior
Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) was named Most Outstanding Field Performer for the second straight year.
The top three finishers in each event were named All-MEAC.
Vassell won the 60-meter hurdles title with an 8.31 in Saturday's final, and she also ran a 7.51 to win the MEAC title in the 60-meter dash. She also won the 200-meter dash after running a 24.16 in the final.
Vassell also helped the 4x400-meter relay team take the gold with a 3:46.75, running along with freshman
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.), junior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica).
Vassell also finished third in the long jump with a mark of 5.76 meters.
Denmark jumped 5.78 meters in the long jump to come in second, while also jumping 11.82 meters in the triple jump to finish second. Her 1.65 meters in the high jump were good enough to tie for fourth with Jonee Artis of Norfolk State.
Freshman
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) ran a 2:11.21 to finish second in the 800-meter run, with Taylor coming in third with a 2:12.43 and Robinson ran a 2:12.67 to come in fourth.
Tate also ran a 5:03.17 to finish second in the mile run.
Senior
Jasmin Branch (Hampton, Va.) ran an 18:45.75 in the 5,000-meter run to finish second, while freshman
Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) came in third with an 18:49.00.
Calder finished second in the women's pentathlon with 3,451 points, winning the 800-meter run portion of the event with a 2:21.11. She jumped 1.70 meters in the high jump, also finishing second in that event.
Senior
Kristal McGreggor (Bronx, N.Y.) finished second in the weight throw on Thursday, recording a school-record distance of 17.50 meters.
Junior
Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) won the men's 60-meter dash in record-setting fashion, running a MEAC-record 6.69. Senior
Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.) finished third with a 6.78. Anderson also ran a 21.69 in the 200-meter dash to finish second.
Reggie Dixon finished fourth with a 21.72.
Damon Dixon won the men's heptathlon for the second straight year with 5,029 points, winning four of the seven events. He also won the pole vault with a mark of 4.03 meters.
He also finished fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.99 meters and the long jump with a mark of 7.02 meters.
Freshman
Je'Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) ran a 48.57 in the 400-meter dash to finish fourth, while sophomore
Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) ran a 1:55.82 to come in fourth in the 800-meter run and freshman
Brandon Burton (Newport News, Va.) came in fifth with a 1:55.83.
Sophomore
Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) ran a 4:25.25 to finish fourth in the mile run.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on March 5-6, when they both travel to Boston, Mass. for the IC4A and ECAC Championships, respectively.
