WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Hampton University women's track & field team opened the 2011 outdoor season on Friday and Saturday in the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University.
Junior
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) helped turn in the best finishes of the weekend for the Lady Pirates. She was the first leg of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished second with a time of 3:46.89 – a team that included freshman
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.), junior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.).
Calder also jumped 1.63 meters to finish fourth in the high jump, the best individual finish of the weekend for the Lady Pirates.
Freshman
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) ran a 56.31 in the 400-meter dash to finish fifth, while also coming in 12th in the 1,500-meter run with a 4:44.83. Taylor came in ninth in the 400-meter dash after running a 56.70.
Freshman
Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) ran a 14.65 to finish sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and came in ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.26.
Sophomore
Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) ran a 1:03.45 to come in 11th in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday, when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays. The Pirates will open their outdoor schedule on Thursday through Sunday at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
