DIXON, VASSELL TO COMPETE IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Meet Notes | Meet Schedule

COLLEGE STATION, Texas –
Hampton University junior Reggie Dixon and senior Racquel Vassell will compete in the 2011 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Gilliam indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.

Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) will run in the men's 60-meter dash, while Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) will compete in the women's 60-meter hurdles.

Dixon, a First Team All-MEAC selection, automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships back on Jan. 29, when he ran a school-record 6.58 in the 60-meter dash at the Penn State Nationals. He also qualified in the event this past weekend, when he ran a facility-record 6.60 to win the 60-meter dash at the IC4A Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass.

In all, Dixon has won eight events this season, and he set a MEAC record with his 6.69 at the MEAC Championships in Landover, Md. on Feb. 19.

Dixon was named an outdoor All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) last year after finishing seventh in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 12.

The Pirates have never had an indoor All-American as a Div. I program.

Dixon, as three-time MEAC Athlete of the Week this season, last ran in the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2009, finishing 10th in the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.11.

Vassell will be making her NCAA debut this weekend, coming off a strong 2010-11 indoor campaign. She was named MEAC Athlete of the Week four times, racking up 16 event titles. She was named First Team All-MEAC in four events after winning the 60-meter dash (7.43), 200-meter dash (24.16), 60-meter hurdles (8.31) and 4x400-meter relay (3:46.75) at the MEAC Championships on Feb. 19.

She was named the Most Outstanding Runner in that meet, sharing the honor with Cynthia Anais of Maryland Eastern Shore. Her efforts also helped the Lady Pirates win their eighth MEAC indoor title in nine years.

Vassell's season-best in the 60-meter hurdles, an 8.16, came at the Penn State Nationals on Jan. 29.

Vassell will look to continue the Lady Pirates' success at the NCAA level; since becoming a Div. I program in 1995, the Lady Pirates have won five NCAA titles. Yvette Lewis won the indoor triple jump title in 2006, before adding the outdoor crown in that event in 2007, while Francena McCorory was a three-time NCAA champion in the 400-meter dash – 2009 indoor, 2010 indoor and 2010 outdoor.

McCorory's time of 50.54 in the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships was an American, NCAA and school record.

The preliminary heats of the men's 60-meter dash will be held on Friday at 5:45 p.m. CST, with the finals being run at 6:10 p.m. on Saturday. The women's 60-meter hurdles preliminary heats will be run on Friday at 4:30 p.m., with the finals coming on Saturday at 5:20 p.m.

Live results for the NCAA Indoor Championships will be available online, and ESPN3.com will offer live coverage of the event on Friday starting at 3:55 p.m. EST and on Saturday starting at 4:55 p.m. EST.
