LADY PIRATES TO COMPETE IN MORGAN STATE LEGACY MEET

BALTIMORE, Md. –
The Hampton University women's track & field team will compete in the Morgan State Legacy Meet on Friday and Saturday at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University.

The Pirates will be off this weekend.

The Lady Pirates finished second in the International Freedom & Friendship Games hosted by North Carolina A&T at the Irwin Belk Track this past weekend. They finished with 129 points, 30 points behind team champion North Carolina A&T.

Two Lady Pirates took individual championships; freshman Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) won the 800-meter dash with a 2:20.92, while junior DeShana Briggs (Norfolk, Va.) jumped 1.56 meters to take the high jump crown. Tate also ran a 4:56.70 to finish second in the 1,500-meter run.

Junior Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) ran a 2:22.08 in the 800-meter run to finish second, while freshman Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) came in second in the 400-meter dash with a 55.96 and ran a 2:22.31 in the 800-meter run to come in fourth.

Freshman Nichelle Harris (Rahway, N.J.) came in third in the 1,500-meter run with a 5:03.03.

Freshman Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) ran a season-best 13.90 in the 100-meter hurdles to come in third and a 12.48 in the 100-meter dash to finish seventh. Freshman Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) jumped 11.48 meters in the triple jump to come in third, while finishing fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.65 meters.

The Lady Pirates 4x100-meter relay team – made up of Denmark, Norman, senior Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) and freshman Emmy Fraenk (Hampton, Va.) – ran a 46.98 to come in fourth.

Hampton last competed in the Morgan State Legacy Meet on April 17-18, 2009, as the Lady Pirates finished fourth in the team standings with 73 points. Vassell won the 100-meter dash in that meet with an 11.72.

Former Lady Pirates Francena McCorory and Rachel Lewis also won event titles in that meet; McCorory won the 200-meter dash with a 24.09, while Lewis jumped 5.91 meters to win the long jump.

This weekend's meet will be the Lady Pirates' next-to-last meet of the outdoor season prior to the 2011 MEAC Outdoor Championships on May 5-7 in Greensboro, N.C. After competing in the Morgan State Legacy Meet, the Lady Pirates will head to Philadelphia, Pa. on April 28-30 for the 117th annual Penn Relays.

The Pirates will also return to action at the Penn Relays.
