PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Hampton University women's track & field team had a strong showing at the 117th annual Penn Relays, held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at historic Franklin Field, raking in three top-five relay finishes.
The Lady Pirates won the ECAC final of the 4x400-meter relay, after freshmen
Emmy Fraenk (Hampton, Va.),
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.),
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) and junior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) ran a season-best 3:39.73.
Fraenk was also on the Lady Pirates' 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay teams.
The 4x200-meter relay team finished fourth in the ECAC finals – when Fraenk, senior
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.), freshman
Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore
Rachel Burrell (Hampton, Va.) ran a season-best 1:37.76.
The same foursome clocked in a season-best 46.79 to finish fifth in the ECAC final of the 4x100-meter relay.
Tate, Robinson, Taylor and senior
Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) ran an 8:59.43 in the college final of the 4x800-meter relay to finish ninth.
On the men's side, junior
Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) turned in the best performance of the weekend, running a 10.68 in the Championship of America finals of the 100-meter dash to finish ninth. He qualified for the final by running a 10.54 in the heats to come in sixth overall.
Senior
Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) jumped a season-best 2.04 meters in the college high jump to finish tied for ninth, while freshman
Ivann Parker (Woodbridge, Va.) tossed the shot put 15.00 meters – also a season-best – to come in 11th in the college section.
Freshman
Larry Ramirez (Pleasantville, N.J.), sophomore
Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.), freshman
Je'Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) and sophomore
Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) ran a 7:43.33 in the college 4x800-meter relay to come in 14th.
Former Lady Pirate
Francena McCorory also ran at the Penn Relays, as part of the USA Blue relay team in the USA vs. The World 4x400-meter relay. The USA Blue team finished second to the USA Red team with an overall time of 3:23.17.
McCorory, a three-time NCAA champion in the 400-meter dash, ran a 49.8 and was the only American among both relay squads to break the 50-second barrier.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, when they head to Greensboro, N.C. for the 2011 MEAC Outdoor Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
The Lady Pirates are the five-time defending champions of the meet, while the Pirates will look to improve upon last year's fifth-place finish.
