WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University football team will hit the road on Saturday to take on archrival Howard in the annual Battle for the Real HU at 1 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
This will be the first of three straight road games to close the season for the Pirates.
The Pirates (2-5, 2-3 MEAC) defeated Savannah State 21-13 this past Saturday in their home finale, while the Bison (5-3, 4-2 MEAC) fell to South Carolina State 41-23 on the road this past Saturday.
Senior running back
Jeremiah Schwartz (Orlando, Fla.) leads the MEAC in rushing, averaging 113.4 yards per game. He has five 100-yard rushing games on the season, following his 33-carry, 188-yard performance against Savannah State this past Saturday. For the season, Schwartz is averaging 5.6 yards per carry, and he's found the endzone nine times on the season.
A bright spot for the Pirates so far this season has been its special teams play; heading into this week's game, Hampton leads the MEAC in punting, averaging 38.4 yards per kick, while also sitting second in the conference in kickoff returns, averaging 24.5 yards per kick.
Hampton is fourth in the MEAC in field goals, going 5-for-7 on the season, and is tied for the conference lead in PATs at a perfect 18-for-18.
Individually, senior
Jordan Stovall (Elgin, S.C.) in second in the MEAC in punting, averaging 40.2 yards per punt. Senior
Taurean Durham (Uniondale, N.Y.) is seventh in the conference in field goals, having made five of his seven tries for a .714 clip.
Junior
Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) is averaging 21.7 yards per kickoff return, the third-best average in the MEAC.
The Pirates are 47-40-1 all-time against Howard, despite the Bison's 10-7 win in Armstrong Stadium last season. That win for the Bison snapped Hampton's 14-game winning streak in the series, which dated back to 1997. Howard has not won consecutive games in this series since a 12-game winning streak against the Pirates from 1969-80.
Since 1984, Hampton has won 16 of 19 games against the Bison – including a 14-2 mark with the Pirates as a Div. I program. In games marked as taking place in Washington, D.C., Howard leads 13-12.
The Pirates are 193-162-6 all-time against schools currently competing in the MEAC after going 5-3 in the conference last season. Hampton is 9-9 against Bethune-Cookman; 23-13 against Delaware State; 8-13 against Florida A&M; 47-40-1 against Howard; 24-35-2 against Morgan State; 24-25-1 against Norfolk State; 25-15-2 against North Carolina A&T; 17-6 against North Carolina Central; 5-0 against Savannah State; and 11-6 against South Carolina State.
This is only the Pirates' 17th year as a member of the MEAC, as they initially became a member back in 1995. Since joining the MEAC, the Pirates have won the conference championship five times, including three straight in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
The Pirates went 1-3 on the road last season, with their lone win coming at Savannah State on Oct. 29. Hampton also lost road contests last season at Old Dominion, at Bethune-Cookman, and at Norfolk State.
During
Donovan Rose's tenure as head coach, Hampton is 7-11 on the road, and they are 0-3 this season away from Armstrong Stadium after their season-opening 41-31 loss at Tennessee Tech on Aug. 30, a 44-20 loss at Florida A&M on Sept. 15, and a 37-20 loss at North Carolina Central on Oct. 18.
