PIRATES FALL ON THE ROAD TO BETHUNE-COOKMAN

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University men's basketball team lost another tough contest on the road Monday night, falling 74-64 to Bethune-Cookman at the historic Moore Gymnasium.

The Pirates (10-19, 6-9 MEAC) have only won one game on the road this season.

Senior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led three Pirates in double figures with 19 points, despite shooting 6-for-21 from the floor, while senior guard Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) added 12 points. Senior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) poured in 10 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Bethune-Cookman jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, but the Pirates battled back, eventually tying the game at 18-18 with 12:18 left in the first half on a Pellum 3-pointer. The Pirates' first lead of the night came at the 10:06 mark on stickback dunk by Agbelese.

Pellum gave the Pirates their largest lead of the first half, 25-22, with another 3-pointer with 9:03 left. He later gave Hampton a 32-31 lead at the 4:29 mark with a pair of free throws, but the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to take a 39-34 lead with 2:36 left in the half following a Garrius Holloman free throw.

Bethune-Cookman went into the half up 39-36.

The Wildcats were hot in the second half, even though the Pirates went up 50-49 with 12:23 left after Pellum hit a jumper. Bethune-Cookman then scored five unanswered points to take a 54-50 lead after another Holloman free throw at the 10:56 mark.

Kevin Dukes gave the Wildcats their first double-digit lead of the night at the 3:52 mark when he hit a 3-pointer to put Bethune-Cookman up 68-58. Stanley Elliott put Bethune-Cookman up 70-60 with 2:29 to play with a jumper.

The Wildcats led by as many as 12, leading 74-62 with 37 seconds left after Elliott hit a free throw.

The Pirates shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61) from the floor, but made just five of their 21 3-pointers and nine of their 15 free throws. Hampton out-rebounded the Wildcats 36-31 and led 19-5 in second-chance points.

Bethune-Cookman (14-16, 10-5 MEAC) shot 54.2 percent (26-for-48) from the floor, hitting five of its 13 3-pointers and 17 of its 24 free throws. The Wildcats also scored 23 points off 13 Hampton turnovers.

Holloman led four Wildcats in double figures with 16 points. Elliott and Adrien Coleman each added 15 points, while Dukes poured in 13 points.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday, as they close out the regular season at the HU Convocation Center, taking on North Carolina Central at 7 p.m. to celebrate Senior Night.
