WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Hampton University women's track & field team had a strong showing at the Tribe Invitational hosted by the College of William & Mary at Zable Stadium on Friday and Saturday, winning five events.
Inclement weather shortened the meet, forcing the cancelation of both high jumps, women's pole vault, men's triple jump, both 200-meter dash races, both 4x400-meter relays and the women's 3,000-meter run.
Sophomore
Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) swept the jumping events over the weekend, winning both the long jump and the triple jump. Her mark of 5.63 meters in the long jump was an outdoor season best, and Denmark added a jump of 12.00 meters in the triple jump.
Sophomore
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) won the 400-meter dash with a 56.20, and senior
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) ran a 1:022.00 to win the 400-meter hurdles.
The Lady Pirates also took gold in the 4x100-meter relay, as junior
Cearha Miller (Waldorf, Md.), sophomore
Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.), sophomore
Emmy Fraenk (Hampton, Va.) and freshman
Cassandra Jones (Norfolk, Va.) teamed to run a 46.45.
Senior
Ermesha Fair (Chesapeake, Va.) finished second in both the long jump (5.63 meters) and triple jump (11.71 meters), while Denmark also finished second in the 100-meter run with a 12.35.
Sophomore
Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) ran a 2:17.96 in the 800-meter run to come in second, while sophomore
Nichelle Harris (Rahway, N.J.) came in fourth with a 2:22.80.
Four Lady Pirates finished in the top five in the 400-meter hurdles; on top of Calder's winning time, sophomore
Maressa Pinnock (Chesapeake, Va.) ran a 1:03.85 to come in second. Junior
Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) came in third with a 1:05.71, while junior
Shantae Boney (District Heights, Md.) ran a 1:10.21 to finish fifth.
Gainey also finished fourth in the javelin throw with a mark of 25.43 meters.
Sophomore
Malekah Holland (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ran a 56.44 to finish third in the 400-meter dash, while senior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) came in fourth with a time of 56.61.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday, when they head to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Raleigh Relays. The Pirates will also return to action this coming weekend in the Raleigh Relays.
