HAMPTON, Va. - The NCAA announced yesterday that Hampton University's football team was one of three Division I teams that face a post-season ban in football. All other men's and women's athletic teams posted note-worthy APR scores, including women's golf team with a 991 rating out of a possible 1000. Other Hampton teams with solid scores included volleyball 968, men's basketball 965, bowling 965, and women's basketball 964.
“I want to congratulate our student-athletes and coaches for the hard work in the classroom in the 2010-2011 season and I know that we will continue to increase our scores,” said Hampton University Interim Director of Athletics Malcolm Avery.
The NCAA also announced 15 collegiate athletics teams that have been banned from post-season play this year. In basketball these include the University of Connecticut, University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Towson University, University of Toledo, University of California-Riverside, and others. The entire list is below.
Dr. William R. Harvey, President of Hampton University stated that, “ I'm in favor of raised standards for our sports teams and the fact that Hampton is being punished does not change my opinion. All of Hampton's programs except football have exceeded the NCAA standards. The challenge for the football program is to join our other athletic programs and I'm confident that this will take place very soon.”
Hampton has already put in place measures to improve the academic performance of the football team. “There will be an increased emphasis on academics for our team,” said Hampton Head Football Coach
Donovan Rose. “We have increased the academic standards for incoming recruits and we believe that our APR will be significantly better in years to come.”
