LADY PIRATES RETURN HOME TO TAKE ON HOKIES

Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center on Wednesday for its 2013-14 non-conference finale, as the Lady Pirates will take on Virginia Tech at 4 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (10-4) had their five-game winning streak snapped on Monday with an 89-70 loss to Georgia Tech in the title game of the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament. Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) led four players in double figures with 27 points.

Tate-DeFreitas and junior guard Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, were each named All-Tournament.

The Hokies (10-2) have won four straight games after defeating Robert Morris 70-64 on Sunday in Blacksburg, Va. Senior forward Uju Ugoka leads Virginia Tech in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.

Freshman guard Vanessa Panousis is second on the team in scoring, with 11.7 points per contest, and senior guard Monet Tellier is averaging 10.0 points per game.

The Lady Pirates are 0-4 all-time against Virginia Tech, including a 55-45 loss in Blacksburg, Va. last season. All four previous meetings have been in Blacksburg; this will be the Hokies' first-ever trip to the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates were a perfect 11-0 at home last season, and in their four-plus years under head coach David Six, they are 44-7 in the HU Convocation Center. Hampton had not lost at home since Jan. 28, 2012, when they fell 69-66 to Coppin State in overtime, prior to a loss to American back on Dec. 4. Hampton had won 16 straight home games before that defeat.

Hampton is 5-1 at home this season after defeating Kansas State 86-75 in double overtime on Dec. 21.

In Six's four-plus seasons at the helm, the Lady Pirates have enjoyed success against the six so-called "power conferences:" the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-12, and SEC. After an 89-70 loss at Georgia Tech on Monday, the Lady Pirates are 7-11 against teams in these six conferences — including a 1-2 mark this season.

Hampton boasts wins over LSU, Florida, Boston College, Pitt, Mississippi State, and Kansas State.
