SAILING WINS THE EDWARD TEACH MEMORIAL

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team won the Edward Teach Memorial, which was held Saturday and Sunday at Strawberry Banks, for the program's first regatta win since the 2011-12 season.

The Pirates totaled 58 points, while second-place Old Dominion tallied 132 points.

The A Division tallied just 22 points, as Veronica Maccari and Joshua Gopeesingh won eight of the 12 races in that division. They also recorded a second, a third, a fourth, and a fifth.

Giuditta Di Laghi and Ramatoulie Sallah sailed in the B Division for Hampton, recording 36 points. Di Laghi and Sallah won one race, while also recording six second-place finishes and coming in third twice.

Competitors had a nice breeze and sunny conditions over the weekend, and sailors were greeted on Sunday by north-northeast winds ranging from 8-12 knots.

The Pirates fielded a second team over the weekend, which came in ninth with 200 points.

The Pirates will return to action this Saturday and Sunday, competing in the William & Mary Colony Cup in Williamsburg, Va., while Di Laghi will be in Annapolis, Md. for the Faye Bennett MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championships.
