FARMVILLE, Va. – The Hampton University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Longwood on Thursday at Lancer Field, dropping the first game 8-1 before losing the second game 16-1 in five innings.
Longwood scored a run in the bottom of the first inning of the first game, before adding two runs in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
Hampton (13-16) had runners on first and second in the top of the fifth inning when junior
Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) fouled out. Junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) and freshman
Danielle Budden (Jackson, N.J.) each advanced, and Budden scored on a throwing error to cut the lead to 5-1.
But the Lancers scored three times in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-1 lead after a three-run home run from Taylor Hedrick.
Budden and sophomore
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) each had two hits in the first game. Junior
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out two in six innings of work.
Longwood led 3-0 after two innings in the second game – scoring a run in the first and two more in the second – before the Lady Pirates found the scoreboard in the top of the third inning after freshman
Kayla DeSchepper (Lakewood, Colo.) singled up the middle to drive in Wilkins.
The Lancers broke the game open in the bottom of the third, pushing across five runs, before scoring eight times in the bottom of the fourth inning – a frame that included three run-scoring doubles and a two-run home run from Emily Murphy – to take a 16-1 lead.
Wilkins had two of Hampton's five hits in the second game.
The Lady Pirates will return home on Saturday for a doubleheader against Howard at 1 p.m. as conference play resumes. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at
