DOVER, Del. – Homestanding Delaware State used wins in the final four singles matches, including a three-set win at No. 6 singles, to knock off Hampton University 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Hampton took all three matches in doubles for the team point as Mariam Mitaishvii and
Mikaela Pierce won 6-1 at No. 1, Julia D'Auvergne and
Cherise Slocombe won 6-2 at No. 2 and
Daneya Charles and
Anastasiia Romanova won 7-5 at No. 3.
In singles, Mitaishvii won her match 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 and Slocombe scored a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 before the Hornets took over winning at No. 3-5 singles in straight sets. Yelyzavet Bessonova scored a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 6 to give the hosts the victory.
Hampton will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 27, when the Lady Pirates face James Madison University at Old Dominion.
