HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University tennis teams hosted Chowan University for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon as the Lady Pirates took down the Hawks 6-1, while the men dropped a decision to Chowan by the same 6-1 score.
Women: Hampton 6, Chowan 1In doubles, Hampton won the team point winning two of the three doubles matches. At the top spot, Mariam Mitaishvii and
Mikaela Pierce won 8-2 over Polina Novachuk and Victoria Smolchenkova. The third tandem of
Daneya Charles and
Anastasiia Romanova defeated Roxana Daneshjoo and Anna Makhneva 8-3 to give Hampton a 1-0 team lead.
For singles, Hampton scored a couple three-set wins as the Lady Pirates took five of the six singles matches. Slocombe won at number two singles defeating Cynthia Carrier 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and
Julia d'Auvergne won a pair of tiebreakers taking her match at number four singles over Jessica DeBackre 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 1-0 (10-3).
Men: Chowan 6, Hampton 1During doubles, Chowan won two of the three matches but all three were down to the end.
Charles Hudson and
Miguel Suarez won at number three over Rafael Goncalves and Louis Proulx 8-4. Chowan took wins by 8-7 (7-3) and 8-6 at the top two doubles lines respectively to earn the team point.
The visitors continued that run through singles taking five of the six singles matches. Hudson stopped that run being bumped up one to number two singles and he scored a tough three-set win 6-2m 5-7m 7-5 over Mateusz Izycki for the lone team point for the Pirates.
Both teams are on the road this weekend for a pair of matches starting Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. when they take on Villanova University.
