NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University Lady Pirates tennis team advanced to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship match on Friday with a 4-1 win over Morgan State at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center at Old Dominion University.
Hampton (12-4) will now face South Carolina State (7-7) who defeated North Carolina A&T State 4-1 in the other women's semifinal. The championship match will start at 9 am on Saturday at ODU.
In doubles, Hampton took two of the three matches to clinch the team point.
Mariam Mitaishvili and
Kristina Titova took a 6-0 win at line #1 over Chloe Kabamba and Dana Santiago and the tandem of
Mikaela Pierce and
Cherise Slocombe won 7-5 at line #2 to give Hampton the team point.
Singles play started and Hampton got an early win from Pierce at line #5 who was leading Yvette Peters-Washington 3-0 when she retired and Hampton went up 2-0. The Bears got their point at line #4 when Kayla Price defeated
Haley Mullins 6-4, 6-2.
Hampton turned around and got wins at line #1 from Titova defeating Kabamba 6-2, 7-5 and the clincher from
Anastasiia Romanova over Dana Santiago at line #6 6-3, 6-4 for the 4-1 victory.
South Carolina State is the defending MEAC champion and has won 11 of the last 12 titles. Hampton has not won the MEAC crown in women's tennis since 2004, when the Lady Pirates completed a three-peat.
