MACON, Ga. – The Hampton University women's tennis team opened their fall schedule this past weekend in the HBCU Championships held at the South Fulton Tennis Center and finished ninth out of 13 schools.
Senior
Mariam Mitaishvili went 3-1 on the weekend and won the A Singles Consolation title. After dropping a three-set match in her opening round, she defeated Tamisha Richardson of Virginia State (8-1), Sofia Rachi of Delaware State (8-3) and Nicole Hutchinson of Howard 8-4 for the title.
Junior
Cherise Slocombe was the runnerup in the B Division singles consolation bracket. She lost her opening round match and then reeled off wins over Phoenix Gandy of Tennessee State (8-1), Elvira Galieva of Delaware State (8-6) and Keren Musware of Grambling (8-2) before falling 8-4 in the final.
The women will next see action on Saturday at the Chowan 2of3 Challenge in Murfreesboro, N.C.
