HAMPTON, Va. – Junior
Lysander Bracey scored a career high 22 points, all in the final 11:28, including three free throws to force OT with 4.9 seconds left as Hampton defeated Coppin State 70-59.
Â
Coppin State started the second half on a 13-4 run to take its largest lead of the night on a Karonn Davis jumper with 15:12 left at 37-29. Hampton (9-13, 4-3) started its comeback and tied the game at 41-all on Bracey's first basket of the game a 3-pointer from the right corner.
Â
That lead grew to 48-43 on a
Trevond Barnes jumper with 4:46 left, but the Eagles had a run left. After a
Charles Wilson-Fisher free throw put Hampton up 51-46 with 1:45 left, the Eagles eight straight points to lead 54-51 on a pair of Karonn Davis free throws with 11 seconds left.
Â
Hampton called timeout and Bracey was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 4.9 seconds left. He drained all three free throws to force overtime at 54-all.
Â
In the extra session, Hampton went from a team that couldn't hit 30% in regulation from the floor to a team that didn't miss going 4-of-4 from the floor and 3-of-3 from 3-point land outscoring Coppin State 16-5. Bracey hit the first triple of OT with 4:10 left as Hampton scored the first 10 points of overtime.Â
Â
Jermaine Marrow put Hampton up 64-54 with a jumper with 2:20 left. After a bucket by Davis, Bracey drained his fifth triple of the night to push the lead to 67-56 with 1:52 left. His two free throws 32 seconds later gave Hampton a 68-56 lead.
Â
The Pirates jumped out to an 18-6 lead early on a pair of free throws by
Kalin Fisher with 13:35 left in the first half. Coppin State responded with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to tie the game at 20 on a triple by Lamar Morgan with 7:29 remaining.
Â
From that point on, no one had more than a two point lead as Marrow hit a free throw with five seconds left in the half to give Hampton a 25-24 lead.
Â
Marrow joined him in double figures with 20 points while Barnes just missed double figures with nine points and eight rebounds.Â
Akim Mitchell hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds to lead Hampton.
Â
The Pirates now go on the road for the next three games starting with a 4pm tip at North Carolina A&T on Saturday afternoon.
