NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University indoor track teams opened their 2018-19 seasons at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open at the Freeman Center on Sunday.
Two school records were broken in the first meet of the year in the weight throw events.Â
Ayana Culhane won the women's weight throw with a school record toss of 18.03 meters (59 feet 2 inches). The old record was set by
Corneisha Mitchell last year with a toss of 17.59 meters.
In the men's weight throw,
Joshua Hunter won the event in a school record throw of 16.52 meters (54-2.5). He broke his old record of 15.18 meters (49-9.75) set at the MEAC Championships last February.
Meet highlights
WOMEN
- In the 60-meter dash Hampton had three in top seven through the semis: Mallory Pitchford (1st/7.65); Kylie McMillan (4th/7.87); Crystal Eley (7th/8.00)
- Kylie McMillan took second in 200 in 26.09
- In the 400, Hampton had three in top eight: Sashana Hinds (2nd/58/51), Jaelen Leonard (3rd/58.85) and Isis Brooks (8th/1:01.55)
- Shakeira Johnson took first in the 600 meters in 1:39.11. Hampton took the top five spots with Alysha Evans in second (1:39.74); DeVonya Brown in third (1:42.56), Gabrielle Chenault in fourth (1:49.23) and Kameryn Trussell in fifth in 1:49.36.
- Zuri Rashad took tenth in the 3000 meters in 11:21.81 and fifth in the 5000 in 19:20.82
- Autumn Smith won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.68 with Crystal Eley taking third in 8.95. Rounding out Hampton's finishers in that event were Faith McMillan in fifth (9.30) and Sydney Davis in sixth in 9.42.
- Hampton won the 4x400 relay as Autumn Smith, Jaelen Leonard, Shakeira Johnson and Sashana Hinds ran 3:58.52.
- In the high jump Hampton took the top two spots as Jailyn Raines won it with a leap of 5-1.75 and Tamadj Fisher was second in 5-1.75.
- Jaelen Leonard won the long jump in 18-3 while Niyah Carpener took third in 16-8.75
- Autumn Smith won the triple jump with a leap of 37-0.25
- Hampton took the top two spots in the shot put as Kiyana Thomas won it with a toss of 42-5.25 and Ayana Culhane took second with a toss of 42-11.5
- The Lady Pirates also took the top two spots in the weight throw with Culhane winning with a school record toss of 59-2 and Corneisha Mitchell taking second in 55-6.25.

The teams will next compete in the HBCU Battle in New York on Jan. 11.
