RICHMOND, Va. – The Hampton University track teams competed this weekend in the VCU Relays and came away with several top performances.
Autumn Smith came away with a first place in the 100 hurdles (14.03) and a second in the 400 hurdles (1:02.84). The relay teams came away with first place finishes in both the 4x1 and 4x4 relays. The 4x100 team of Smith,
Asha Copeland,
Isis Brooks,
Mallory Pitchford ran a 47.00. In the 4x400 , the pairing of Smith,
Asha Copeland,
Isis Brooks and
Sashana Hinds ran 3:53.16.
Brooks and Copeland went 1-2 in the 100 meters with Brooks winning in 11.9 and Copeland running an 11.98. Â Hampton went 1-2-3 in the 100 hurdles with Smith (14.03) winning and Kylie Mcmillan coming in second (14.19) and
Kaitlin Scott in third in 14.33.
Ayana Culhane had a solid weekend in the throw events with a first in the hammer (163-6), second in the javelin (126-8) and a fourth in the shot put (41-9.25).
On the men's side,
Khalil Gary was first in the 800 meters (1:59.38),
Jaelen Williams took first in the 400 hurdles (52.64) and
Nicholas Edwards won the shot put with a toss of 50-8.75.
In the 110 hurdles, Hampton went 2-3-5 as
Dylan Beard took second (14.51), Williams was third (14.55) and
Charles Graham was fifth in 14.90. The 400 hurdles saw Hampton got 1-3 as Williams won and
Jerrick Powell was third in 55.51.
Hampton took second in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays as Brenan Garrett, Powell, Moffatt Wanjiru and
Douglas Sessoms took second in the 400 relay (42.22). The 4x400 group of
Derrick Price, Wanjiru, Williams and Powell ran 3:23.56.
For the second week in a row,
Joshua Hunter broke the school record in the hammer throw as he finished second with a toss of 49.36m (161-11).
Hampton will visit a pair of nationally-reknown meets next weekend by participating in the Texas Relays and the Florida Relays.
