HAMPTON, Va. -- Chazz Woodson, Hampton University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach, announced his incoming additions today for the Spring 2022 season.   Between the classes of 2020 and 2021 recruits, Woodson has brought in 21 new members of what will be the first Hampton team to participate in Southern Conference action in 2022.

Being a first-year head coach who hadn't taken the field with his team, Woodson had a common theme in his pitch and found some benefit heading into his first season at the helm. 

"I spent a lot of time telling the Hampton lacrosse origin story.  Who are we, why am I here and what's next for the program,?" he said.  "One benefit has been the ability to prioritize recruiting this year, as opposed to having to practice plan or game plan."

Now with the ability to have prospective student-athletes on campus, it gets teams back to a "regular" state of recruiting.  "Hampton, probably like other small schools, is a place you need to visit and get a feel for.  You want to get a sense of the campus energy and figure out if it's the right fit for you," Woodson said.

One big boost to the program will come when they take the field for the first time in 2022, conference affiliation as the Pirates set sail for their first season as members of the Southern Conference.  "Excitement and anticipation.  Those are the two words that most readily reflect the feelings of our squad," said Woodson.  "We now have something tangible to compete for and to prepare for.  Our current freshmen are excited to play in general as none of them have had the chance to play collegiately and for most, it's been two years of not playing since they missed their senior seasons."
