SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced their weekly men's lacrosse awards on Tuesday afternoon and Hampton senior goalkeeper
Paxtin Powell was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
A Bradenton, Florida native, Powell amassed 50 saves in a pair of games for Hampton who saw action for the first time since 2020. In the season opener at Mt. St. Mary's, Powell recorded 23 saves with a save percentage of .575 to tie the school and Southern Conference records for saves in a game.
Two days later in the home opener against conference foe VMI, the senior topped that total with a new Southern Conference and school record of 27 saves with a .643 save percentage as he faced 66 Keydet shots in the 15-6 loss.
His two games are the second and third most saves in a game in NCAA Division I this year. Powell is leading NCAA Division I in saves per game averaging 25 per game.
Hampton returns to action on Saturday at Bellarmine University in Kentucky for a noon start.
