NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. (January 13, 2024) –
Abria Smith broke the Hampton women's indoor shotput record this afternoon during the HBCU Showcase at the Nike Track and Field Center. She was named the Most Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet.
Smith won the shotput event with a distance of 15.20m. This was 0.2m more then
Oluwatomilayo Akintunde's record set at 15m last week at the VCU Invitational.
The women's team won the meet with 115 points and the men finished 5th.
"The HBCU Classic was a good track meet," said Coach Pierce. "We had some outstanding performances and success, however, we just need to continue to get better each week. Overall, it was a good weekend in New York."
Field Highlights
Nya Harmon finished 2nd in the shotput (14.52m), followed by Akintunde in 3rd (14.40m). In the weight throw, Smith and Akintunde grabbed 2nd and 3rd with new PRs (17.96m, 17.28m).
Nina Pitt and
Anissa Bernard took 3rd and 4th in the triple jump (11.94m, 11.78m).
Emmani Shaw tied for 2nd in the high jump (1.65m).
Track Highlights
Dugion Blackman won the 500m race by more than a second at 1:02.75, which is 7th fastest in the country. Freshman
Leo Davis crossed the line first in the 800m and set a new meet record (1:53.25). Teammates
Korede Otusaio and
Rushshane Fullerton came in 3rd and 4th (1:55.67, 1:56.57).
On the women's side,
Jordan Mozie set a meet record in the 1600m, winning with a time of 5:02.23. In the 800m,
Kayla Spencer raced to the finish line in 1st (2:13.88), while
Dejah Grant trailed by only .12 seconds behind her in 2nd (2:14.00). The 4x400m squad set a new meet record after finishing 1st in 3:48.61.
Anissa Bernard grabbed 3rd in the 60m hurdles (8.77).

The Pirates will travel to Lynchburg, Va. on January 18th, to compete in the Brant Tolsma Invitational at Liberty University.
