Charleston’s Late Strike Lifts Cougars Past the Lady Pirates, 1-0

HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 17, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer team fell the Charleston 1-0 at Powhatan Field. The Lady Pirates kept the Cougars off the board until the 81st minute of the match. Coach Scot Vorwold's side tried to produce the equalizer but ran out of time.

The match started out physical with Hampton committing three fouls in the opening minutes. While Charleston produced two quick shots, the Lady Pirates responded early. In the seventh minute, Ece Lea Evin fired a shot. Lea Evin's chance just barely missed the crossbar.

Later on in the match, the Cougars manufactured a strong chance to take the lead in the 17th minute. Charleston's first shot was off-target. The Cougars quickly regained possession and tested Hampton's goalkeeper Avery John. The Rosenfield, Germany native, withstood the challenge and made the save. John finished the contest with 10 saves making three straight matches double-digit saves.

In the second half, Charleston's offense continued to test Hampton's defense. The Lady Pirates also allowed four fewer shots in the final 45 minutes. While the physicality of the match tempered down, Coach Vorwold's squad received bookings. Both Mattie Edozie and Makayla Wade were given the yellow cards.

The Cougars gained the advantage late in the 81st minute. Antonio Bella found the back of the net after the corner kick. While the Lady Pirates had possession in Charleston's attacking half, Hampton could not produce the tying goal.

Up next, Hampton returns to action against Drexel on Sunday, Oct. 20. The match at Powhatan Field is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports. Sunday's contest will also be senior day for the Lady Pirates.
