Pirates Begin Four Game Road Stint Against America East Foe UMBC

HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 19, 2024) … The Hampton University men's basketball team begins their second road trip of the 2024-25 campaign. The four-game road stint begins with the Retrievers of UMBC. Tuesday night's contest is set to be streamed on ESPN+ and tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. 

THE SERIES

UMBC holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time series and won the most recent matchup 80-76 on Nov. 27, 2023, in Hampton, Va. For the Pirates, only two players saw action in the recent meeting which were Kyrese Mullen and Dan Banister Jr. Mullen finished the contest with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. The game went down to the wire with the contest tied at 70-70 heading into the final two minutes. UMBC closed out the game on a 10-3 run to secure the third straight win in the series. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

In its last time out the Pirates fell to Norfolk State 67-56 in the series' first contest inside the Convocation Center since the 2021-22 campaign. Hampton trailed the Spartans by as many as 18 points. Hampton throughout the second half brought the contest back to within six points. While the Spartans did not close the contest out on a large run, Norfolk State was able to make shots down the stretch. George Beale Jr. led the Pirates in scoring 12 points off the bench. 

The Pirates continue to receive production off the bench at a high rate. On average Coach Ivan Thomas's squad is scoring 41 points per game off the bench which is the 18th most in the country. In all four contests this season, Hampton's leading scorer of the contest has come off the bench. HU has also been effective on the offensive glass. The Pirates are tallying 19 offensive rebounds per game ranking Hampton fourth in the country and first in the Coastal Athletic Association. 

ABOUT UMBC

The Retrievers are coached by Jim Ferry who is in his fourth season at the helm. UMBC enters Tuesday night's contest with a 3-2 record. Coach Ferry's squad has only faced three Division I opponents. The Retriever's only win against a Division I foe came against Mid-Eastern Atlantic foe Coppin State 92-67.

Through the beginning of the 2024-25 season, UMBC has been one of the best three-point shooting teams in the America East. Earlier this season the Retrievers made an America East single-game high 17 threes against Valley Forge. The Retrievers are currently leading their league in three-point field goal percentage shooting 38.6 percent from beyond the arc. Louie Jordan is off to a hot start from deep shooting a league-high 61 percent (14-of-23) from deep. 

COMING UP NEXT

After Tuesday's contest against UMBC, the Pirates are heading to the Cayman Islands Classic. Hampton opens the tournament against Boise State on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 11:00 a.m.
