HAMPTON, Va. (Dec. 27, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule against Howard. The Pirate's game against the Bison is a part of the CBS Sports Classic: HBCU Showcase and will be broadcast on CBS. With a win, Coach Ivan Thomas's side can continue to reach marks that have not been hit in a while. The Pirates have finished a month undefeated since the 2002-03 campaign. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

Since becoming a Division I program the series has favored Hampton. The Pirates are 42-8 against the Bison since the 1995-96 campaign. Hampton has won the most recent against Howard 63-61 in Newark, N.J. Only two players for the Pirates return from the last meeting Dan Banister Jr. and Kyrese Mullen

ABOUT HAMPTON

In its last time out, Hampton defeated Loyola (Md.) 76-68. The win over the Greyhounds has secured the Pirates to enter the new year above .500 for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign. Wayne Bristol Jr. led Coach Ivan Thomas's squad in scoring with 21 points. The Upper Marlboro, Md. native, went 7-for-14 from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Etienne Strothers chipped in with 14 points while going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. His performance against the Greyhounds helped him receive CAA Rookie of the Week honors. 

The Pirates continue to be one of the best offensive-rebounding teams in the country. Hampton on average is tallying 14.5 offensive rebounds per game which is 15th in the nation. Mullen's 2.58 offensive rebounds per contest have helped HU rank towards the top of the Division I level. Throughout the 2024-25 campaign, the Pirates bench has been an asset. Hampton is producing the third most bench points per game in the country (40.4) and sits first in the CAA.

ABOUT HOWARD

The Bison enter Saturday's contest with a 5-7 record. Howard has faced two teams ranked in the top 25 but has fallen in both contests. The Bison are coached by Kenneth Blakeney who is in his sixth season with the program. Coach Blakeney's side made the NCAA Tournament in 2024. The Bison fell in the First Four to Wagner.

In its last time out Howard fell to Drexel 68-65. Coach Blakeney's squad has been one the best three-point shooting teams in the country this season. The Bison currently sits 12th in the nation for three-point percentage (40.1 percent). Howard while shooting a high rate from beyond the arc is making nine three per contest which leads the MEAC. 

COMING UP NEXT

The Pirates resume conference in the new year against Charleston On Thursday, Jan. 2 at 7:00 p.m. Hampton's matchup against the Cougars will begin a two-game road stint.
