Hampton to Visit CNU on Sunday

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 10, 2024) – The Lady Pirates are preparing to compete at local school Christopher Newport tomorrow. The matches will begin at 11:00 AM at the James River Country Club in Newport News, Va.

The Lady Pirates are searching for back to back wins for the first time since they closed out last year's regular season on a three game win streak. In their last match, they defeated the Morgan State Bears by a score of 6-1. Hampton won the doubles point, along with singles victories by Mio Kozaki, Meiri Okuwaki, and Lucia Jorrin Fernandez. Sofia Sokolova and Masa Mitic won their matches by forfeit.

So Far this Season

There have been two hot doubles teams for the Lady Pirates this season. Kozaki and Sokolova and Jorrin Fernandez and Diana Starodubtseva are both 2-0 this season as pairs.In singles competition, Kozaki and Okuwaki lead the team with 2-0 records. Jorrin Fernandez follows at 1-1. Mitic and Sokolova are 1-1 and Starodubtseva is 0-2.

Scouting the Christopher Newport Captains

David Weiner is in his seventh season as a coach of the Captains. During the 2020-21 season, he led Reagan Delp to the NCAA Division III Singles National Championships.
During the fall season the Captain were 1-1 with a win against North Carolina Wesleyan University and a loss to Johns Hopkins. This is their first match of the spring season.
