Hampton Closes Out Two-Game Road Stint Against Northeastern

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 23, 2024) … Hampton University's men's basketball team returns to action this weekend on the road at Northeastern. The Pirates are coming off back-to-back wins over Coastal Athletic Association Opponents.  The Huskies had dropped their past two conference contests but ended the streak against Elon on Thursday defeating the Phoenix 64-58. Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad has never faced Northeastern inside its home gym.

A Look at Your Pirates

Hampton in its list time out, defeated Campbell on the road 72-68. The Pirates struggled to score in the first half but were able to keep it a low-scoring contest holding the Camels to 37 percent shooting. While Jordan Nesbitt had a team-high 21 points. Three more Pirates finished the contest in double figures. Ja'Von Benson secured his second double-double of the season scoring 10 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Down the stretch, Ford Copper hit crucial shots for HU. The Charlotte, N.C. native, did most of his damage from inside the paint. 

Throughout the season Hampton has defended the three well. Since the beginning of February, the Pirates have held opponents to 28 percent shooting from beyond the arc. HU also has been a solid rebounding team. Coach Joyner Jr.'s Squad sits fourth in the conference for rebounds per game (36.7).  The Pirates have one of the best rebounders in the country with sophomore Kyrese Mullen. The Norfolk, Va. native, sits 64th in the country and second in the CAA for rebounds per contest (8.5).

Hampton by the Numbers
  • 1,000: Jordan Nesbitt is four points away from having 1,000 career points
  • 1.8: Since the beginning of February, Ja'Von Benson has seen a 1.8 increase in his rebounding average
  • 14: Benson dominated on the glass against Campbell setting a career-high in rebounds
  • 13.3%: The Pirates held Towson to a season-low shooting percentage from beyond the arc.
  • 25.3: Hampton ranks fourth in the conference for bench points per contest 

A Look at the Huskies 

Northeastern enters Saturday's game with an overall record of 11-17 and is 6-9 in league play. The Huskies are coached by Bill Coen who is completing his 18th season with the program. Coach Coen's squad is one of the better free-throw-shooting teams in the country. With a 75.2 free throw percentage, NU sits second in the CAA and 52nd in the nation.

The NU's top scorer this season has been graduate senior Chris Doherty. Doherty is one of three huskies during the 2023-24 campaign to average double figures. The Marlborough, Mass. native, has also been an efficient rebounder. Doherty with his eight double-doubles this season sits second in the CAA for double-doubles. Jared Turner is Northeastern's threat from beyond the arc hitting 59 threes this season.

  • 52.8%: Chris Doherty leads the CAA in field goal percentage
  • 37.6%: Opponents are shooting a league-high 37.6 percent from beyond the arc against the Huskies
  • 15.0: NU commits the 38th fewest fouls per game in the country
  • 3.1: Northeastern ranks fourth in the CAA for rebounding margin
