Lady Pirates Set to Take on Four Teams in Florida

HAMPTON, Va. (March 10, 2024) – The Lady Pirates are traveling down to Florida to compete in four duals over spring break. They face Fairleigh Dickinson, Marist, Bryant, and Marquette.

On Tuesday, Hampton defeated UNC Greensboro by a score of 4-3. The Lady Pirates won two doubles matches and three singles contests. Mio Kozaki and Diana Starodubtseva defeated Sydney Bly and Raegan Mitchell 7-5 and Meiri Okuwaki and Sofia Sokolova beat Luna Urso and Arina Babkova (6-2). In singles, Starodubtseva defeated Craft (6-3, 6-4), Sokolova took down Bly in a three-set battle 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and Masa Mitic won the clinching point for the Lady Pirates with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Ella Olexa. 

Season's Records

Kozaki leads the Lady Pirates with a 5-2 singles record and is followed by Mitic, Sokolova and Lucia Jorrin Fernandez with four wins. Okuwaki is 3-3 and Starodubtseva is 3-4. In doubles, Okuwaki and Sokolova are 3-0 as a pair. Jorrin Fernandez and Starodubtseva have the next best record at 2-0. Eight different pairs have played together so far.

Scouting FDU (5-4)

Jeff Brandes has been coaching the Knights since 2016. The team is 5-4 with wins against Le Moyne, Binghampton, Wagner, Towson, and Queens (N.Y.) in their last match.
Valentina Silva leads the Knights with a 7-2 singles record while three teammates are at five wins. Silva and Katsiaryna Kostsina are 4-0 and Gauri Bhagia and Alena Kubanova hold a 5-2 record in doubles.

Scouting Marist (2-10)

Deepak Sharma is in his second full season as a part of the Red Foxes coaching staff. The team's two wins came at Lafayette and Binghampton. Their last match was a loss to Lehigh (4-1).

Scouting Bryant (4-6)

Barbara Cilli has been working at Bryant for 24 years as the head women's coach and has led the team to seven NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bulldogs recently won four matches straight against Monmouth, Fairfield, Stony Brook, and TUFTS. In their last match, they fell 6-1 against Brown.

Lisa Marie Dugec has recorded the most wins for the Bulldogs in singles at 6-2 with teammate Natalia Vela at 5-4. Yahli Noy and Maria Jose Diaz are the best duos pair.

Scouting Marquette (2-10)

Jud Shaufler is working with Marquette in his 14th season with the program. The Golden Eagles have defeated Eastern Illinois and Milwaukee. Emilija Kojcic is 6-8 in single duals. There have been 19 doubles pairs.
