Hampton’s Strong Fourth Frame Lifts HU Past Monmouth in Five Innings

Box Score WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Match 16, 2024) … Hampton University's softball team picked up its first Coastal Athletic Association win of the season. The Lady Pirates offense found its rhythm in the top of the fourth scoring seven runs. Freshman Taryn Bennett picked up her fourth win of the season. Bennett in her five innings of work had three strikeouts while only giving up one hit.

Throughout the early portion of the contest, Hampton was able to produce base-runners. In the top half of the first Emily Kepple reached first on a base hit. With two outs already on the board Monmouth got out of the jam. Later on in the third frame, the Lady Pirates had a strong chance to score first.  Kylee Quinn began the stanza with a base knock to left center field. Aitirhna Aiken advanced Quinn on a hit by pitch putting runners on first second. The Hawks once again got out of the inning with back-to-back flyouts.

During the bottom half of the third MU jumped out to its first lead of the game. The Hawks with runners of first and second attempted a double steal. Monmouth on a mental mistake made by the Lady Pirates, stretched out the steal attempt to score making it 1-0. Since there was a runner the Hawks made it a two-run game on the sacrifice fly.

However, Coach Monique White's squad answered Monmouth's bats in the top half of the fourth. With two outs the Lady Pirates offense exploded. Carmynn Bonner tied it up with a single to left field. Sophomore Aitirhna Aiken loaded up the bases on a base knock in the infield. Hampton would take the lead on Emily Kepple's walk. HU during the next at-bat took a commanding 7-2 lead on Brooke Williams's grand slam to left field. The Winslow, Ariz. native's, home run would be her first of the season.

The Lady Pirates' bats continued to produce in the fifth frame. Emily Kepple brought in two more runs with a single to the outfield. Once again with two outs, Hampton brought in another run to make it 10-2. In the bottom half of the fifth, HU's defense kept Monmouth quiet to defeat the Hawks in five innings.

Hampton is back in action tomorrow at noon against Monmouth completing the three-game series.
