Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. (March 29, 2024) – The Lady Pirates (8-5) defeated the Norfolk State Spartans by a score of 5-2 on Friday afternoon. The Hampton men (2-11) lost 5-2 to the Spartans. Both duals were played at the NSU Tennis Complex in Norfolk, Va.
Women's
The Lady Pirates fell in their first doubles match but regrouped quickly.
Meiri Okuwaki and
Sofia Sokolova beat Irina Ioana Iurea and Sabina Maria Iurea 6-1 to increase their doubles record to a team-best 8-1. Teammates
Masa Mitic and
Lucia Jorrin Fernandez took down Alessia Stan and Isabella Cottrell 6-3. Mitic and Jorrin Fernandez earned their first win as a pair.
After winning the doubles point,
Mio Kozaki won her singles match against Ioana Iurea in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1. The Aichi, Japan native now leads the team with the best singles record at 8-4. Okuwaki made quick work of Stan, winning 6-2, 6-1. Jorrin Fernandez sealed the victory with the fourth point for the Pirates by defeating Sabina Iurea 6-3 and 6-2. Mitic beat Cottrell by scoring 6-0 and 6-1 to finish the day. Mitic and Okuwaki move to 7-4 in singles play and Jorrin Fernandez to 7-6.

In the men's match, the Pirates won two out of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Donte Armbrister and
Emiliano Jorquera beat Boris Lunin and Deniz Okyay in a thriller 7-6 (7-3).
Aryan Arora and
Daniel Flynn grabbed the other doubles match by defeating Vladisav Gorbatenko and Frederick McRae (6-2). Both duos move to 2-1 on the season.
Jorquera took down Gorbatenko in a three-set match in the Pirates' only singles win (3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2). The Montreal, Quebec native leads Hampton with a singles record of 9-4.
