Pirates Close Out Regular Season at Home Against Towson

HAMPTON, Va. (May 1, 2024) … Hampton University softball closes out the 2024 regular season against conference foe Towson. In the program's history, the Lady Pirates have only faced the Tigers on three separate occasions. The three-game series will begin on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Saturday closes out the 2024 campaign for Hampton and will be senior day. 

A Look at the Lady Pirates 

In their last time out, Coach Monique White's squad defeated former MEAC foe Norfolk State 7-3. For most of the contest, the Lady Pirates trailed the Spartans. HU's bats caught fire in the sixth frame producing six runs. Carmynn Bonner started off the inning with a triple and Taylor Ivey was able to bring her in on a single to left field. Brooke Williams swung the momentum in favor of the Lady Pirates with her three-run blast to center field. The Winslow, Ariz. native had a stellar game going 3-3 from the plate and tallying two doubles.

While the Lady Pirates have only produced five home runs this season, they are fourth in the Coastal Athletic Association in doubles (54). Bonner has been a double machine for Hampton recording 14 doubles, the most in the league. Williams is close behind Bonner tallying 12 doubles this season. Hampton's bullpen has also been solid this season. The Lady Pirates have given up the third-fewest home runs in the conference.

A Look at the Tigers

Towson enters the weekend with a 20-31 overall record and is 8-16 in the conference. The Tigers are coming off a three-game series against Delaware. Towson fell in all three contests at home. The Tigers are coached by Lisa Costello who has been with the program for 29 seasons. During her tenure, Towson has amassed over 800 wins.

The Tigers are one of seven teams in the country this season to produce a triple play. However, TU has the third-worst fielding percentage in the conference (.955). Throughout the 2024 campaign, senior Mackenzie Lake has been Towson's top batter. In 51 games played, she has tallied 48 hits while only striking out 10 times. Erin Brown is the Tigers ace out of the bullpen. this season she has thrown five complete games along with one shutout.
