Lady Pirates Return to Powhatan Field Hosting Howard

HAMPTON, Va. (Aug. 16, 2024) … After beginning the season on the road at Waldron Family Stadium, the Lady Pirates return home to Powhatan Field hosting rival Howard. Sunday's matchup will be the series' fourth meeting. Fans attending the match will have the chance to win two free tickets to the Cousinz Festival. 

A Look at the Lady Pirates

Hampton is coming off a 4-0 defeat to Mount St. Mary's in the season opener. While the Lady Pirates were trailed early, they still were able to create chances. Freshman Nylah Jennings produced HU's first shot of the contest. During the waning minutes of the first half, Mattie Edozie manufactured a chance from inside the box. The Woodbridge, Va. native, had her shot saved by the Mountaineers goalkeeper. In the final 25 minutes of the match, Hampton rattled off five more chances. 

The Lady Pirates enter the 2024 season with a young roster. Head Coach Scot Vorwold in his first recruiting class brought in 13 signees. Eight of Hampton's newcomers saw action in the season opener. Both Annika Neubauer and Aileen Perez started the match while playing the full 90 minutes. Through the opening week of the season, Evan-Nichole Whitaker has been crucial to Hampton's back line. In the first half alone Whitaker made two key tackles inside the box halting Mount St. Mary's attack.

A Look at the Bison

Howard is looking to build off its 2023 campaign where they went 12-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the NEC. The Bison made the conference tournament semifinal round before falling to Central Connecticut State. Coach Brent Leiba enters his 15th season with the program. Since the 2014 season, Howard has had six seasons with 12 or more wins. In 2015 and 2018 the Bison reached the NCAA Tournament. Leiba has also led the program through its transition from the SWAC to the NEC.

The Bison won the season opener 4-2 against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Saint Peter's. Coach Leiba's side got on the board in the 20th minute with a goal by Mimi Richards. Later in the match, Richards scored another on a penalty kick. After an own goal, the Bison jumped out to a 2-0 advantage. Before the end of the first half, the Peacocks made it a one goal contest. Howard's offense continued to produce in the second half finding the back of the net two more times.
