Lady Pirates Defeat Lincoln Earning First Win at Powhatan Field

NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 13, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer team won its final home non-conference match defeating Lincoln 2-0. The victory over the Lions was the program's first win at Powhatan Field. Both goals the Lady Pirates scored came towards the end of each half. HU also outshot their opponent 17-4 and took seven more corner kicks.

Hampton's offense was able to rattle off a shot in the opening moments of the contest. Ece Leah Evin fired outside the penalty box but Lincoln's Nevaeh Washington made the save. In the first half, the Lady Pirates outshot the Lions 9-2 and won the possession battle controlling the ball for 55 percent of the half.

Coach Scot Vowold's side struck first in the 40th minute of the match. Off of a corner kick, HU had possession inside the opponent's penalty box. Leah Evvin found sophomore Sanaa Perry in front of the net to put the Lady Pirates in the lead 1-0. Perry's strike was her second of the 2024 campaign. The Bowie, Md. native, through seven contests, has tied her 2023 mark for goals scored.

Coming out of the half, Lincoln started to test the Lady Pirates' defense. The Lions produced an early shot but Kaitlyn Howell made the save. Howell finished the match with four saves. The freshman earned her second shutout of the season. Hampton created a strong opportunity to double its advantage in the 54th minute. Nylah Jennings broke away from Lincoln's back line and fired off a shot. Jennings's shot just missed the right side of the goal. The Bowie, Md. native, finished the match with four shots.

Ellen Van Caenegem doubled the Lady Pirates' lead late in the second half. With less than three minutes remaining, her strike from inside the box found the back of the net. The Forney, Texas native's, goal was her second of the season.

Hampton returns to action for one final non-conference match against Virginia State on Monday, Sept. 16. The match will be played in Petersburg, Va. at Rogers Stadium with the contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
