Pirates Face Another Road Test Against William & Mary

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 22, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team continues its three-game road trip against conference front-runners William & Mary. The two squads faced each either this past Thursday and Tribe escaped the Convocation Center with the victory 67-64. Thursday night's contest will be both program's second CBS Sports Network game this season. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

Since both sides have been members of the Coastal Athletic Association the Pirates have defeated the Tribe inside their home arena. Hampton's last road victory against William & Mary came during the 2021-22 campaign. The Pirates won a close defensive battle 54-53. However, the series has favored HU inside Kaplan Arena. Hampton is 1-9 in its 10 games at William & Mary's home court. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

Hampton in its last time out defeated North Carolina A&T on the road 74-73. The Pirates had not won at the Corbett Sports Center in nine years prior to Monday's victory. Noah Farrakhan led HU in scoring off the bench with 17 points. The Newark, N.J. native, went 4-for-8 from the field and tallied seven assists.  With the win, the team has already passed its win total from the 2023-24 campaign. Coach Ivan Thomas's side has also tripled the amount of road victories compared to last season's total. The program's three road wins are the most since the 2020-21 campaign. 

Coach Ivan Thomas's side continues to receive massive production from the bench. The Pirates are producing 38.6 points per game off the bench which is second in the nation and first in the conference. In 12 contests Hampton's leading scorer has come off the bench. Consistently the Pirates are winning the turnover battle with an average margin of 2.5. HU's turnover margin ranks 59th in the nation and is first in the CAA.

ABOUT WILLIAM & MARY

The Tribe enters Thursday's contest with a (5-1) conference record. Kaplan Arena has been a fortress for William & Mary this season with a (7-0) record when playing at home. In its last time out the Tribe fell to the Seahawks of UNCW 85-74. Coach Brian Earl's squad went 13-for-33 from beyond the arc. Gabe Dorsey led the side in scoring with 18 points on 50 percent shooting from the field.

William & Mary continues to be one the best three-point shooting teams in the country. On average the Tribe is attempting the 10th most three per game (30.6) but is making 11.3 per contest which is fourth in the nation. Dorsey has been the side's best shooter from beyond the arc. He has made 55 three-pointers while shooting 41.7 percent.

The Pirates close out their road trip against the Seahawks of UNCW. Saturday's tip-off at Trask Coliseum is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed on FloSports.
