HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 3, 2024) … After resuming conference play on the road against Charleston, the Hampton men's basketball team closes out the weekend at Elon. The Pirates enter the matchup 1-1 and conference play and the Phoenix are 1-0. Both sides have already faced a similar conference opponent North Carolina A&T.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Prior to joining the Coastal Athletic Association the Pirates had never faced the Phoenix. The series first meeting happened during the 2022-23 season at the Schar Center with Elon winning narrowly 70-68. Hampton's first win over the Phoenix came during the postseason of the 2023-24 Campaign. The program secured its first CAA Tournament win defeating Elon 56-55 with Kyrese Mullen making the game-winning shot at the buzzer.

ABOUT HAMPTON

Hampton in its last time out fell to Charleston 94-67. The Pirates struggled from the charity stripe going 13-for-22 from the free-throw line. For only the second time this season, HU shot below 70 percent from the free-throw line. Coach Ivan Thomas's side had two players finish in double figures. Freshman Daniel Johnson tallied a career-high 22 points off the bench on 8-for-13 shooting. Johnson's 22-point performance marked the first time in his collegiate career that he produced 20 or more points. George Beale Jr. also manufactured 14 points off the bench.

As the Pirates near the halfway point of the season, HU continues to receive production off the bench. Hampton on average is receiving 40.8 points per game off the bench which is the second most in the country. Even though the Pirates had their struggles from the charity stripe against the Cougars, Coach Ivan Thomas's side ranks 39th in the country for free throw percentage (76.7%). While Hampton sits among the best in the CAA for steals per contest (8.1), Noah Farrakhan has led the charge for the Pirates. Farrakhan has tallied 20 steals which is the fifth most in the conference.

ABOUT ELON

The Phoenix won their conference opener against North Carolina A&T 75-67. Elon's starting five all finished the contest in double figures. TJ Simpkins led the way with 19 points while going 4-for-14 from the field. Simpkins would 10-for-11 from the free throw line and had seven rebounds. As a team, the Phoenix shot 82 percent from the charity stripe but went 7-for-25 from beyond the arc. The victory over the Aggies marked Elon's third consecutive win. Elon's longest winning streak this season was four games.

The Phoenix this season are one the best teams in the country at not fouling. Elon on average is only committing 12.4 fouls per game ranking fifth in the nation and first in the CAA. Along with not fouling on the defensive end, the Phoenix have held teams to a low field goal percentage. On average opponents are shooting 37.8 percent from the field against Elon which is the 11th lowest percentage in the country.
