Softball Set to Take On Norfolk State in the Battle for the Bay

HAMPTON, Va. (March 17, 2025) … Coach Cat Tarvin's side is set to take on the Norfolk State Spartans in a mid-week non-conference matchup. The Pirates won both meetings of the Battle of the Bay last season. Both sides have already started conference play. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

The series between Hampton and Norfolk State has been close in recent years. HU has a slight advantage winning six of the last 10 games. The Pirates won the most recent matchup 7-3 on April 30, 2024. Hampton has won seven of the last 10 meetings at the Pirates Softball Stadium. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

This past weekend Coach Tarvin's squad earned its first conference win of the 2025 season. Hampton defeated Elon 4-3 in extra innings. The Pirate's win over the Phoenix marked the program's first win against Elon. Both Carmynn Bonner and Leah Maduro finished the game with two hits. Angelina Branch got the start on the mound for HU. Branch pitched the full eight innings and recorded four strikeouts. The Chesterfield, Va. native, picked up her fourth win of the season.

Bonner has been the Pirate's top offensive player this season. The Dayton, Ohio native, leads the Coastal Athletic Association in batting average with a .452. She is also second in the conference for on-base percentage (.524). Sophomore Kylie Hill is the only other HU student-athlete to have a batting average over .300. Hill is currently on a five-game hitting streak. The Chesapeake, Va. product ranks ninth in the CAA for doubles (5).

Branch has been Hampton's go-to pitcher this season. Her 46 strikeouts are the fourth most in the league. Branch has pitched a team-high 68 innings which is the second most in the conference. During the non-conference slate, she produced two shutouts. 

ABOUT NORFOLK STATE

Norfolk State began Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play this past weekend against South Carolina State. The Spartans took the first and third games of the series. Queen Edmonds had a superb series for Norfolk State. The sophomore went 4-for-9 from the plate and tallied two RBIs. The Spartans are coached by Angie Nicholson who is in her first season with the program. Norfolk State is three wins away from matching its win total from the 2024 season.

The Spartan's bullpen has the best ERA in the MEAC with a 3.25. Brierra Tyler's efforts have helped Norfolk State top of their conference with a 3.12 ERA. The senior has pitched on shutout while recording a team-high 28 strikeouts. Coach Nicholson's side also ranks toward the top of the MEAC in on-base percentage with a .316.
