Lloyd Carter

Lloyd Carter finished his third season as the first head coach in the history of Hampton University men’s lacrosse in 2018, ushering the program into the NCAA Div. I era after heading an intramural program he co-founded at the school for the past four years.

Carter sits at the helm of the nation’s lone HBCU men’s lacrosse program.

After a first season that saw the Pirates open with national fanfare and exposure on ESPN SportsCenter on the Road, Hampton scored its first program victory in year two defeating Greensboro College 7-5 on March 4, 2017.

The 2018 season was full of records for the Pirates, who won five games for the first time in program history. Twice did Carter's squad post 15 goals in a game, but 15-5 victories. Hampton set a program record with 17 goals against Chowan University on April 4, 2018, falling 19-17 to the Div. II program.
A native of Baltimore, Md., Carter lettered in the sport in both high school and college – playing for Morgan State beginning in 1977 until the program was discontinued in 1981. His collegiate career came after a decorated career as an attacker and midfielder at Edmonson High, where he was All-State and graduated 10th in his class.

Carter’s collegiate playing days came toward the back end of Morgan State’s “Ten Bears” era – in which the Bears were one of the most formidable programs at the NCAA Div. II level. In 1981, the year the program was disbanded due to a lack of funding, Morgan State defeated such programs as Villanova, Michigan State, Georgetown, and Notre Dame.

Carter’s coaching experience began in Baltimore’s Northwestern High School in 1999. During his tenure that stretched more than a decade, Carter was a four-time Baltimore City Lacrosse Coach of the Year (2000, 2011-13), and he served as president of the Baltimore City Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Under his leadership, Northwestern High won two regional, two city (2002, 2012), and six divisional championships. In 2012 and 2013, Northwestern High reached the regional final four – and from 2011-13, the team won three straight division championships.

In 2002, Carter founded Blax Lax Inc., a club-level organization where college- and high school-level players competed in programs and summer leagues in Howard County, Md. From 2004-08, Carter co-founded and coached club lacrosse at Morgan State.

The focus of Blax Lax is to promote diversity in lacrosse, as well as to improve the exposure and increase the opportunities to play and succeed in the sport for the African-American community.

Blax Lax is a US Lacrosse BRIDGE and U.S. Lacrosse Urban Alliance Organization affiliate.

Carter received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Maryland Baltimore County. In fact, Carter has two Master’s degrees from UMBC: one in public administration and one in emergency health services.
