RICHMOND, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team lost its first game of the season on Tuesday, as the University of Richmond beat the Lady Pirates 64-46 at the Robins Center.
Senior
Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va.) led the Lady Pirates (2-1) with 14 points on 6-for-15 shooting, while sophomore
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 12 points behind the strength of three 3-pointers. Jenkins and freshman
Breanna Jones (Springfield, Va.) each led the Lady Pirates with five rebounds on the afternoon.
Britanni Shells led Richmond with 16 points, while Danielle Bell added 10.
Hampton shot just 28.6 percent (16-for-56) for the game, while the Spiders shot 42.9 percent (24-for-56). Richmond went 4-for-9 (44.4 percent) from behind the arc, compared to 27.3 percent (6-for-22) for Hampton. The Spiders also held a 48-32 edge in rebounds and forced Hampton into 23 turnovers. Hampton forced Richmond (3-1) in 26 turnovers, converting 16 points off of them.
The Lady Pirates took a 9-7 lead with 15:19 left in the first half when Jenkins converted a 3-point play, and
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) added to the cushion with a 3-pointer with 12:33 to go in the half to put Hampton up 15-9. Rachel Bilney would give the lead back to Richmond with 9:26 left in the half with a layup to make the score 17-15.
The Spiders would open up an 11-point lead from that point, going into the half up 32-21. Hill had 10 points in the first half to lead the Lady Pirates – who shot 7-for-22 (31.8 percent) – while Shells had eight for the Spiders.
Richmond would lead by as much as 21, when Kara Powell hit a pair of free throws with 4:54 to play to put the Spiders up 59-38.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, when they head to Dallas, Texas for the Southern Methodist Tournament. Hampton will take on SMU Friday night at 8 p.m. EST.
