DURHAM, N.C. -- The Hampton University men's tennis team (2-2) bounced back from Friday's loss to defeat the Eagles of North Carolina Central (3-8) 4-3 on Saturday at the NCCU tennis courts.

 

In singles action, No. 1 sophomore Nelio Mattos defeated Jack Waissen of North Carolina Central 7-5, 6-4. The Pirates' No. 2 freshman Kenneth Green came up short against N.C. Central's Alejandro Espitia 6-2, 6-2.

 

Hampton's No. 3 junior Gellert Varga beat Jose Fabara in straight sets (6-0, 6-1).

 

Junior Edson Alves lost to the Eagles' Trey Chatman 6-3, 6-1.

 

No. 5 freshman Alvin Fludd of Hampton beat Bryan Jackson 6-1, 6-2.

 

The Pirates' No.6 junior Marcelo Reda defeated Stephen Allsop 6-1, 6-3.

 

In doubles, the team of Mattos and Varga lost a tough match to N.C. Central's Waissen and Chatman 8-6.

 

The Pirates' Kenneth Green and Marcelo Reda were defeated by Espitia and Fabara 8-3.

 

Hampton finished off strong with a win with Fludd and Alves defeating Jackson and Allsop 8-2.
