LADY PIRATES BEAT SHAW AND UMES

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's tennis team (6-7) won two out of three matches over the past week beating Shaw and Maryland-Eastern Shore.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Lady Pirates defeated the Lady Bears of Shaw University 3-1. 
No. 1 junior Jovanna Sangria (Long Beach, Calif.) lost her first set, but bounced back by winning the next two set to give her the match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Lolia Kienka. No. 2 sophomoreBarenese Myers (Beverly Hills, Calif.) was defeated in straight set to Shaw's Fernanda Silva 1-6, 5-7.
 Freshman Tabita Daolio (Centro Campinas, Brazil) had a battle with Lady Bears' Livia Oliveria; however, Daolio won 5-7, 7-5, 7-6. Junior Janelle Small (Pickering, Ontario) won in straight sets against Shaw's Janae Williams 6-1, 6-2.
On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Pirates destroyed the Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore 7-0.
In singles play, Preseason MEAC Player of the Year, Na-Hyun Baek (Seoul, Korea) defeated Solana McMillian 6-2, 6-0, while Sangria blanked the Lady Hawks' Jocelyn Jackmon 6-0, 6-0 for her sixth win in a row.
Myers won her first game in three matches, defeating Latoya Coltrane of UMES 6-1, 6-0.
No. 4 Maria Ycaza (Guayaquil, Ecuador) defeated Latoya Jones in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) she is on a three-match winning streak. Daolio beat UMES' Anna Katenta 6-0, 6-0 for her second straight win.
Small beat Alisia Belt in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Baek and Myers defeated McMillian and Jackmon 8-0, while Sangria and Ycaza beat UMES' Coltrane and Jones 8-0 and Daolio and Small were victorious over Katenta and Belt.
On Sunday, the Lady Pirates came up short against University of Chicago at home 1-6. This was their first loss at home this season.
Sangria lost to Kendra Higgins 3-6, 0-6. Baek had the only victory for the Lady Pirates, beating Jennifer King in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4 for her sixth victory of the season.
Ycaza was defeated in straight sets to Chicago's Carnen Vaca Guzmen 4-6, 1-6, while Myers lost to Linden Li 6-1, 6-2.
Daolio came up short to Chrissy Hu 3-6, 6-7, and Small was defeated by Tiffany Ngyen in straight sets, 2-6, 3-6.
The Lady Pirates return to action on Sunday, when they will travel to Dover, Del. to compete against the Lady Hornets of Delaware State University.
