VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team, which closed out the regular season winning three straight and 11 out of 12, will be the No. 2 seed in the 2010 MEAC Championships, which will be held March 8-13 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Lady Pirates (17-11, 12-4 MEAC) will face the winner of Tuesday's No. 7 Maryland-Eastern Shore-No. 10 Delaware State matchup on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Hampton beat UMES 64-48 on Feb. 1 and swept both meetings with Delaware State during the regular season – beating the Lady Hornets 62-43 in Dover, Del. on Jan. 30 before taking a 47-41 win at the HU Convocation Center on Feb. 27.
Hampton won its third straight game to close out the regular season on Thursday, beating Howard 55-43 behind a career-high 21 points from
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) and 10 points from
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas).
North Carolina A&T clinched the regular-season title by going 14-2 in conference play; the Lady Aggies didn't lose a MEAC game until Hampton handed them a 90-80 loss at the HU Convocation Center on Feb. 15. The Lady Aggies will play their first game on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., taking on the winner of the No. 8 South Carolina State-No. 9 Coppin State contest in the quarterfinals.
The 2010 MEAC Women's Basketball Championships will start on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with an opening round contest between UMES and Delaware State.
