PIRATES, LADY PIRATES GEAR UP FOR MEAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Hampton University men's tennis team (10-5, 5-0 MEAC), the Northern Division's No. 1 seed, will face the Southern Division No. 4 seed Spartans of Norfolk State on Friday (3-13, 0-3 MEAC) at 8:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals of the 2010 MEAC Championships at the Millbrook Tennis Center.
The Northern Division's no. 2 seed Hampton University women's tennis team (8-8, 4-1 MEAC) will face the Southern Division No. 3 seed Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman (10-9, 2-2 MEAC), also on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
The Pirates won their last match when they beat Morgan State 6-1 in Baltimore, Md., while the Spartans lost to William & Mary 0-7.
Last year in the MEAC Championships, the Pirates defeated Norfolk State in the quarterfinals 4-2. In the semifinals, the Pirates beat Florida A&M 4-3 before falling 0-4 in the championship match to South Carolina State.
The Pirates are lead by First Team All-MEAC selection
Gellert Varga, who leads the team in wins and is on a nine-match winning streak. Isaiah Stewart has also won his last four matches. First Team All-MEAC selection

Alvin Fludd are on three-match winning streaks heading in to the MEAC Championship.
On March 6, the Lady Pirates lost to the Lady Wildcats 1-6.
Jovanna Sangria defeated Katarina Szaboova 6-3, 6-4, while
Barenese Myers defeated Shereen Peterson-Pau in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Stacey Lopez defeated
Tabita Daolio 6-2, 6-1, and Eva Hankova defeated
Maria Ycaza 6-1, 6-2.
Valeshia Kendrick then beat
Janelle Small 6-1, 6-0 and Jeneice Ward finished the day with a win by default.
The Lady Pirates defeated the Morgan State Lady Bears in their last match 6-1, while the Lady Wildcats closed out the regular season by losing to Stetson 1-6.
The Lady Pirates are led by First Team All-MEAC selection Sangria, who has a team-high ten wins, and Second Team All-MEAC Na Hyun Baek who has won seven of her last ten matches.
Last year in the MEAC Championships, the Lady Pirates beat North Carolina A&T in the quarterfinals 4-0, but lost to Florida A&M in the semifinals 1-4.
