NEW YORK, N.Y. – Hampton University senior
Racquel Vassell and junior
Reggie Dixon led a strong performance for the men's and women's track & field teams on Friday in the New York City Gotham Cup at the Armory Track & Field Center.
Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) had a hand in winning three event titles for the Lady Pirates, while
Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) won the Pirates' lone event in record-setting fashion, running a school-record 6.65 to win the 60-meter dash.
Dixon has won five event titles so far this season.
Vassell ran a 7.61 to win the 60-meter dash, tying her season best in that event. She also won the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.46, before helping the 4x400-meter relay team take the gold medal with a 3:45.59.
Senior
Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.), senior
Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) were also on that relay team.
Vassell has won seven event titles so far this season.
Freshmen
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.),
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) and
Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.), along with junior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.), made up the 4x800-meter relay team that took the gold in 9:20.71.
Tate also finished second in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:53.68, while Taylor ran a 1:15.47 in the 500-meter dash to come in second.
Emmy Fraenk ran a 56.68 to finish second in the 400-meter dash.
Senior
Kristal McGreggor (Bronx, N.Y.) registered a distance of 16.52 meters in the weight throw to come in third, while
Teiara Denmark jumped 11.89 meters in the seeded triple jump to come in third.
Vassell jumped 5.53 meters in the seeded long jump to finish fourth.
Senior
Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles for the Pirates with an 8.05, while also finishing fourth in the high jump with a distance of 2.01 meters. Freshmen
Brandon Burton (Newport News, Va.) and
Je'Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) each posted a runner-up finish – Burton with a 1:53.49 in the seeded 800-meter run, and Hutchison with a 48.40 in the 400-meter dash.
Senior
Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.) finished second in the 60-meter dash with a 6.81.
