LADY PIRATES TO CELEBRATE SENIOR NIGHT AGAINST FAMU

Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will play its final home game of the season on Monday, as the Lady Pirates celebrate Senior Night against Florida A&M at the HU Convocation Center at 6 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (19-6, 11-1 MEAC), in their second season under head coach David Six, had their Saturday contest canceled via forfeit after Bethune-Cookman suspended its entire team for one game on Thursday in the aftermath of that team's Monday brawl against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Florida A&M (13-12, 8-5 MEAC) had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, falling 67-58 to Howard at Burr Gymnasium. Junior guard Antonia Bennett led the Lady Rattlers with 19 points, while junior guard Tameka McKelton added 15 points and freshman guard Jasmine Grice scored 11 points.

Hampton is 19-10 all-time against Florida A&M, having won four straight and seven of the last eight in the series – including a 59-47 decision at the Lawson Center earlier this season on Jan. 24. The Lady Pirates won both of last season's meetings, beating the Rattlers 67-54 on Jan. 25, 2010 at the HU Convocation Center, before traveling to Gaither Gymnasium to grab a 65-48 win on Feb. 22, 2010. FAMU last beat Hampton on Jan. 12, 2009, a 68-59 decision in Tallahassee, Fla. The Rattlers won the first two meetings against Hampton in 1997, before the Lady Pirates went on to win five straight in the series. Hampton is 8-4 all-time against FAMU at the HU Convocation Center.

Prior to Monday's game at North Carolina A&T, the Lady Pirates had gone 11 straight games without giving up 60 points, including back-to-back games in which they had given up a season-low 29 points against Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore. Hampton gave up just 45.4 points per game in that span, compiling a 10-1 record, and the Lady Pirates lead the MEAC and sit 12th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 53.3 points a contest this season. Hampton is also first in the MEAC in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to 36.6 percent shooting.

The Rattlers went 18-11 last season, finishing fifth in the MEAC with a 9-7 record before falling to Howard in the MEAC Tournament. In returning three starters and five letterwinners this season, FAMU was picked to finish fourth in the MEAC this season.

McKelton leads FAMU in scoring, pouring in 17.3 points per game, while Bennett is scoring 16.7 points per game to go along with a team-high 8.7 rebounds per contest.

FAMU is scoring 65.1 points per game, while giving up 65.7 points a night.

After beating North Carolina Central 79-44 on Feb. 7, the Lady Pirates are 9-2 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season. The Lady Pirates were 10-3 at the HU Convocation Center last season, winning their last seven home contests. Hampton went 7-1 at home in MEAC games last season, and Six is 19-5 in his career as a head coach at home.
