GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hampton University bowling team finished fourth in the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Championships on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Gate City Lanes.
The fourth-place effort marked Hampton's best finish in the tournament, and the Lady Pirates just missed advancing to the semifinals, falling 4-2 to Delaware State in the consolation bracket in Baker match play action.
The Lady Pirates finished the season 62-66.
Hampton went 1-3 in Friday's 5-person team match action, beating Morgan State 911-817 before falling 818-850 to Norfolk State, 824-832 to Florida A&M and 829-903 to Delaware State. Senior
Jazzminn Richey-Obey (Lorain, Ohio) led the Lady Pirates with 757 total pins, averaging 189.3 pins per match.
She bowled a team-high 225 against Florida A&M and a 213 against Delaware State.
Sophomore
Rebecca Glazier (Newport News, Va.), a Second Team All-MEAC selection, totaled 747 pins for an average of 186.8 per match. She bowled a 193 against Morgan State and a 190 against Florida A&M, while also rolling a 183 against Norfolk State and a 181 against Delaware State.
Freshman
Amy Chirico (Hazleton, Pa.) bowled a 216 against Morgan State, while freshman
Nicole Kettler (Cincinnati, Ohio) bowled a 214 against Norfolk State.
The Lady Pirates went 2-3 in baker total pinfall on Friday, beating South Carolina State 733-715 and Bethune-Cookman 738-632. They then lost 727-808 to Maryland Eastern Shore, 658-660 to Morgan State and 724-740 to Norfolk State.
Hampton, the No. 5 seed in Baker match play on the bracket, opened with a 4-1 win over Norfolk State before falling 2-4 to UMES. Once in the consolation bracket, the Lady Pirates beat Bethune-Cookman 4-2 before losing their match against the Lady Hornets.
UMES won the MEAC title, sweeping Morgan State 4-0 in Sunday's finale. Paula Vilas of UMES was named the tournament's Outstanding Performer, while Lady Hawks coach Sharon Brummell was named Outstanding Coach.
