Day 2 Results | Men's Decathlon | Women's Heptathlon
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams completed the second day of competition in the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the Irwin Belk Track.
The Lady Pirates are second in the team standings with 39 points, eight points behind Norfolk State, while the Pirates have 18 points to sit fifth in the men's standings.
Norfolk State leads the men's standings with 56 points.
Freshman Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) gave the Lady Pirates their first event title of the meet on Friday, winning the high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters. Freshman Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) jumped 1.65 meters to come in fourth.
Denmark also finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.88 meters.
Sophomore Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) finished fourth in the women's heptathlon with 4,191 points. She won the 800-meter run portion of the event after running a 2:25.37.
Freshman Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) set a new school record in the 800-meter run, running a 2:08.94 to post the second-best semifinal time and qualify for Saturday's final. Junior Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.), with a 2:10.51, and freshman Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.), with a 2:10.58, also qualified in the 800-meter run.
Norman ran an 11.81 in the semifinals of the 100-meter dash and a 24.06 in the 200-meter dash to qualify for Saturday's final in each event. She also posted the second-best time in the semifinals of the 100-meter hurdles, running a 14.08 to qualify for the final.
Senior Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) posted the fastest time in that event with a 13.82.
Freshman Emmy Fraenk (Hampton, Va.) ran a 55.91 to qualify for the finals of the 400-meter dash.
Senior Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) turned in the Pirates' best finish in a final on the day, coming in second in the high jump with a mark of 2.10 meters.
Junior Bennett Taylor (Seattle, Wash.) rallied to finish third in the men's decathlon with 5,547 points. He finished second in both the 1,500-meter run (4:56.51) and the pole vault (3.10 meters) on Friday.
Junior Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 10.47 in the 100-meter dash to qualify for Saturday's final, posting the fourth-fastest semifinal time in winning his heat.
Sophomore Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman Larry Ramirez (Pleasantville, N.J.) each qualified for the 800-meter run final; Ramirez ran a 1:53.51 on Friday, while Rogers clocked a 1:54.22.
Senior Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) qualified for the 110-meter hurdles finals with a 14.72.
